The Centers of Excellence announced winners of the Quality Innovation Award (QIA) 2024 -Spain phase- an initiative with CSIC, ANECA and UNIBASQ collaboration. Mikrobiomik has been chosen as the winner in the category of Innovation in Healthen, among hundreds of participants.
This award recognizes the development of MBK-01, the innovative biological medicine under investigation based on intestinal microbiota, designed to provide a solution to serious diseases for which there is no effective therapeutic alternative. MBK-01 has been administered to patients infected with Clostridioides difficile, bacteria in the ICD-01 clinical trial (completed in 2023), which causes severe and recurrent episodes of diarrhea affecting thousands of people, particularly elderly patients with compromised immune systems, an infection that is usually treated with antibiotics and has a significant recurrence rate. MBK-01 is positioned as an effective and safe option for both primary episodes and recurrences, addressing the challenges of antibiotic resistance and moving forward solutions against serious infections.
‘Receiving this award is a recognition of the effort and dedication of our team and encourages us to continue researching and developing innovative solutions in the field of healthcare,’ said Technical Director Celia Morales.
The Quality Innovation Award is one of the main international platforms to promote and highlight high quality innovation. For the national phase, a team of more than 60 people from EUSKALIT and the CEX-Centros de Excelencia have evaluated the candidatures, along with a group of experts who have selected the finalists. Afterwards, a Jury made up of representatives from all the CEXs, have chosen the winners and runners-up of the national phase.
With this recognition, Mikrobiomik reaffirms its commitment to the advancement of microbiota-based treatments to improve the quality of life of patients in Spain and worldwide. The awards of the QIA Awards 2024, Spain phase, will be presented on the 28th of November at the headquarters of the CSIC-Spanish National Research Council in Madrid.
